100 YEARS AGO

May 17, 1908 Sprung as a bomb on the eve of the final battle in the extra session controversy, Speaker Allen Hamiter, who issued the call for the special session, and whose efforts to hold one are being opposed by Gov. Pindall, last night issued a final statement in regard to the present controversy, in which he charges that some of the members of the Penitentiary Board and the convict lessees are fighting the extra session because they fear the legislature will abolish the convict lease system. In connection with his statement he confidently predicted that a majority of the legislators will answer his call tomorrow; that the legislature will go into session with more than 75 members of the house and a majority of the Senate present.

50 YEARS AGO

May 17, 1958 TEXARKANA — A detective whose wrists were handcuffed behind him managed to reach a concealed pistol and kill a prisoner who was trying to escape from a train. The prisoner had disarmed and shackled the detective with his own handcuffs.

25 YEARS AGO

May 17, 1983 Twenty-one Nashville businessmen, angered by union allegations of unsanitary conditions at Tyson Foods’ Nashville plant that are threatening jobs and the possible loss of $ 20 million in local annual income, came to Little Rock to picket the UAW building and to go to a McDonald’s restaurant for a lunch of “Chicken McNuggets,” which are made at the plant. Stressing that they were not affiliated with Tyson, Nashville Mayor Joe Ball said the group was there to protest the “lies the union is spreading” about the plant.

May 17, 1998 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Arkansas probably clinched an NCAA Regional bid yesterday, but Coach Norm DeBriyn kept his game face on well after his baseball team beat Mississippi State 7-3. “We came here to play on Sunday and to win,” De-Briyn said. “I don’t think our players are happy with what we’ve done yet this year. It’s like there’s a job that’s not yet finished.”
