Beebe forms veterans task force

Gov. Mike Beebe announced Thursday he’s forming a task force to examine ways the state can help veterans.
Beebe is calling it the “Arkansas Yellow Ribbon Task Force.”
“Returning home from a war zone can be one of the best moments in one soldier’s life, while causing another soldier significant distress. It is critical that we provide every serviceman and woman with the opportunity to succeed when returning stateside,” Beebe said in a news release.
The governor’s office said that George Westmoreland of Rogers, an aide to the secretary of the Army, will take an active role in the task force. Also involved will be the Arkansas National Guard, the state Department of Veterans Affairs, state agencies, legislators, colleges, business officials, and nonprofit officials.
Beebe spokesman Matt De-Cample said Beebe will be appointing people to the task force later this month and dates and locations of the meetings haven’t been determined. It’s possible the task force may recommend legislation for the 2009 General Assembly, he said.
