100 YEARS AGO Oct. 5, 1908 CADDO GAP — Arrangements have been made for the trains to stop at the hot springs below town and let passengers on and off. Many people visited the springs today. 50 YEARS AGO Oct. 5, 1958 Nearly 70, 000 people attended the Arkansas Livestock Exposition Friday and Saturday to pull this year’s total attendance mark to 154, 250 as the six-day show ended yesterday. 25 YEARS AGO Oct. 5, 1983 Declaring that Arkansas has been “a land of lost opportunities” for too long, Gov. Bill Clinton said in a speech Tuesday night to the opening assembly of his special legislative session on public education that the state faces a “magic moment” and has a chance to “change the face” of the state’s history. 10 YEARS AGO Oct. 5, 1998 The hot, dry weather made it a bear of a summer for the state’s estimated 3, 000 black bears. Thirst and hunger overcame the bears’ fear of humans and drove them down from the hills and out of the forests more this summer than in past years, said David Goad, bear program coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. About 50 bears were trapped and relocated this year because of their closeness to humans, Goad said. Most of this year’s relocations were in Polk County, where the numbers of bear sightings were greater than in other parts of the state.
