Vocal group sets St. Paul’s concert FAYETTEVILLE — The vocal ensemble group Heinavanker (the Haywain ) will perform at 3 p. m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 224 N. East Ave. The group of six perform songs inspired by early sacred music. The ensemble, with roots in northern Europe (primarily Estonia ), draws its name from a triptych panel painting by Hieronymus Bosch in which a wagon full of hay rolls through a world vexed by sin. From atop the hay beautiful music sounds as an angel prays for the sinners. The concert is free and the public is welcome. Contributions to Friends of Music at the church will be welcomed. BENTONVILLE — The congregation of First United Methodist Church will celebrate its 150 th anniversary with a special service and meal on Oct. 12. Worship will be at 11 a. m. in the sanctuary, and a free meal will follow in Hines Hall. Former pastors and members are invited to attend the celebration and reunion.

The church dates back to the days of circuit-riding preachers who came to the area in the 1800 s. The small original church building was constructed on the present site at the corner of Central Avenue and N. W. A Street in 1858. Destroyed during the Civil War, the building was replaced with a two-story brick structure in 1868. Fire destroyed that facility, too, and it was replaced in 1900. The current building was completed in 1954.

Included in the historic artifacts at the church are the original church bell, which was made in 1856 and is still rung each Sunday, and the communion pitcher and two goblets from 1870 that survived the 1891 fire.

Members and former members are invited to bring photos and church memorabilia to the celebration. Items can be dropped off at the church office, 201 N. W. Second St. Information is available by calling (479 ) 273-2712.
