PHOENIX — Conor Jackson hit the winning two-run single as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied from a five-run ninth-inning deficit to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Thursday.
Three Brewers pitchers failed to record an out as seven consecutive Diamondbacks reached base in the ninth.
Guillermo Mota gave up a leadoff single to Robby Hammock, a walk to Chris Burke and an infield single to Augie Ojeda.
Left-hander Brian Shouse came on to face pinch hitter Chad Tracy, who hit the first pitch into right-center field to clear the bases and cut the Diamondbacks’ deficit to 5-3.
Closer Salomon Torres (4-2 ), who blew his third save in 18 chances, came in and gave up a bloop single to Justin Upton, which put runners at first and third. Orlando Hudson’s double down the left field line made it 5-4 and sent Upton to third base. Jackson then singled through the drawn-in infield, scoring Upton and Hudson.
Milwaukee shortstop J. J. Hardy matched a career high with four hits — a home run, two doubles and a single. METS 11, CARDINALS 1 Jose Reyes’ basesclearing triple keyed a six-run third that included pitcher Mike Pelfrey’s first-ever RBI as New York beat host St. Louis. The Mets’ Carlos Delgado had a two-run home run and three RBI. Pelfrey (6-6 ) won his fourth consecutive, allowing 1 run and 6 hits in 7 innings. Cardinals rookie Mitchell Boggs (3-1 ) gave up 11 runs, 10 hits, 6 walks and 2 wild pitches in 6 innings. Boggs, who entered with a 4. 37 ERA and exited at 6. 59, also committed a fielding error that allowed an unearned run to score in a three-run first. Aaron Miles extended his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games, also the Cardinals ’ high this season. GIANTS 8, CUBS 3 Tim Lincecum (10-1 ) increased his National League-leading strikeout total to 122 with eight in six innings and also singled in a run and scored as host San Francisco beat Chicago. REDS 5, NATIONALS 3 Brandon Phillips had three hits and three RBI as host Cincinnati beat Washington. PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 1 Cole Hamels (9-5 ) came within one out of his second shutout of host Atlanta as Philadelphia swept the three-game series. Hamels, who earned his first career shutout against the Braves on May 15, gave up his only run with two outs in the ninth as the Phillies improved to 8-1 against the Braves. He gave up only three hits through eight scoreless innings before a leadoff double to Chipper Jones in the ninth. Hamels hadn’t allowed a base runner to reach third until Brian Mc-Cann drove in Jones with a two-out double. Hamels struck out 7, walked 2 and gave up 5 hits and 1 run in 8 2 / 3 innings. DODGERS 5, ASTROS 2 Chad Billingsley (8-7 ) gave up 6 hits, struck out 5 and did not allow an earned run in 8 innings to win his fourth consecutive start as Los Angeles beat host Houston. American League ROYALS 10, ORIOLES 7 Mark Grudzielanek went 4 for 5 and played a key role in a seven-run sixth inning as Kansas City took an early 3-0 lead, then overcame a four-run deficit to beat host Baltimore. Jose Guillen led off the sixth with a walk and Billy Butler doubled before Miguel Olivo struck out. Kevin Millar then botched a grounder to first as Guillen scored. Adam Loewen (0-2 ) replaced starter Garrett Olson and gave up an RBI single to Ross Gload before Tony Pena got an infield hit to load the bases. David DeJesus singled in a run, matching his career-high hitting streak of 15 games, and Grudzielanek greeted Chad Braford with a runscoring single to tie it. Alex Gordon followed with a sacrifice fly and Guillen capped the rally with a two-run single. RED SOX 7, YANKEES 0 Jon Lester (7-3 ) pitched a sharp five-hitter to win his fourth consecutive decision as Boston beat Andy Pettitte (9-6 ) and host New York to end a five-game losing streak. The Yankees lost for the fourth time in five games. Lester struck out eight and walked two. Lester’s lone problem came when he walked Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter to start the game, but the left-hander escaped by getting Bobby Abreu on a grounder and striking out Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi. Pettitte lasted just 4 2 / 3 innings as his six-game winning streak ended. ATHLETICS 3, WHITE SOX 2 Justin Duchscherer (9-5 ), the major-league leader with a 1. 96 ERA, gave up five hits in seven innings as Oakland ended host Chicago’s seven-game winning streak.
