DENVER - Rogers businessman and political activist Thurman Metcalf, a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, anticipated Barack Obama's acceptance speech and planned to pack Thursday night for his trip home to Arkansas.

But Metcalf was quick to say the cause that brought him to Denver - he strongly supports the Democratic Party platform's pledge of affordable health care for all Americans - is one he'll keep promoting through Election Day and beyond.

He will speak on behalf of Democrats' health-care proposal at Democratic political clubs in Benton County and around the state, and will be working hard to get the proposal enacted after the election, Metcalf said.

Delegates to the convention had to make the trek away from Convention Hall to Invesco Field to hear candidate Obama's acceptance speech. Metcalf said delegates had to be in place there at 1 p.m. Denver time. He didn't exactly relish sitting in the hot sun, where members of the Arkansas delegation will be placed. But he's sure it will be worth the effort to see Obama, Metcalf said.

Metcalf began the political year as a supporter of since defeated presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, the New York senator. He has switched to Obama and believes Clinton has done a lot to unify Democrats by supporting Obama's nomination, Metcalf said.

"We are so united," he said.
