SPRINGDALE — Court Appointed Special Advocates of Northwest Arkansas is meeting the challenge of serving more children in foster care.

CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to advocate for abused and neglected children who have entered the foster-care system. As the organization completes the first quarter of this fiscal year, it is serving almost 100 more children than it was able to serve last year in the four-county area of Washington, Benton, Madison and Carroll counties.

CASA has set its goal to serve 400 children by the end of June 2009. The organization is well on its way with 249 children advocated for so far this year.

From its Springdale office, CASA trains community members who wish to help. Volunteers advocate for foster-care children to ensure all of their needs are being met, and to assure the children that they have someone looking out for them during a very scary and difficult time in their lives.

Currently, CASA has a special need for volunteers from members of the Latino community.
