Facing adversity is all about attitude
Thad Moore
Once, I heard a wellknown preacher say, “Life is about 10 percent what happens to you and about 90 percent how you respond to it.” Many times we are put in situations where we don’t have much control. Events and circumstances can change quickly, and many times we don’t like the changes. Recently, I talked with a man from Indiana. I asked him if his family was involved in the flooding. Unfortunately, he said yes. He told me there were several inches of water in his home. Yet, in the midst of his pain, he made a marvelous statement. He said, “I have learned in this flooding that my possessions are just stuff.” What a great attitude. He had learned in his difficulties what was really important. Had he chosen to be bitter, he might have missed this valuable lesson. - Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Incinerator keeps drugs out of the water supply
Chief Jim Wozniak
Our drug incinerator program, Pyromed, is going great guns. We have burned more than 550 pounds of drugs since March of this year. For those of you who are not aware of the program, it works like this: You all have expired, unused, unneeded prescription drugs in your medicine cabinets and homes. You also have some overthe-counter medications that fall into this nolonger-needed or expired drugs category. The problem is what to do with them. It’s no longer acceptable to just throw them out with the trash or flush them down the toilet. - Wednesday, July 2, 2008
Bella Vista fireworks set for Thursday
From Staff Reports
Bella Vista’s annual Independence Day fireworks display is planned for Thursday, July 3, at the Loch Lomond Dam. The fireworks — sponsored by the Bella Vista Property Owners Association and the city of Bella Vista — will begin at dusk, or shortly after 9 p.m. Parking will be in the field below the dam and near tee box No. 5 on the POA’s Scotsdale Golf Course. Those attending the fireworks are asked to obey parking instructions, in order to accommodate a large number of viewers in a crowded parking space. Representatives with the city encourage those planning to attend the fireworks display to allow for plenty of time to arrive and park. Entering and exiting the parking areas will probably be slow because of the high volume of attendees. - Wednesday, July 2, 2008
Garden club ends another successful year
From Staff Reports
The Bella Vista Garden Club is wrapping up its 36th year. Members have declared the 2007-08 year a success, thanks to the support of the community. The club’s two largest events — an annual plant sale in May and a biannual flower show in June — attracted many Bella Vistans, according to organizers. Plants provide avenues for the club’s numerous community service projects and have allowed members to beautify many spots throughout the city. On a regular basis, the group provides plants and grounds upkeep at the U.S. Highway 71 visitor center, the gazebo area at Bella Vista Memorial Cemetery and the Living Memory Garden at the Bella Vista Country Club. The club took on a new project this year, helping maintain the grounds at the Veterans Wall of Honor. - Wednesday, July 2, 2008
