The Economy? Is There A Lesson We Can Learn?

By Marie Putman

Money is on everyone’s mind these days it seems. Recently I gave my granddaughter a two dollar bill. I wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen one. Maybe she’d think it was fake. But I guess she spent it. It was part of the money I got from recycling soda cans. We’ve been giving Morgan that money for years. The first time I gave her the money, I said, “This is what we got for selling coke cans.” She replied, “I should get the money. I helped empty them.” Then I read an article that the two dollar bill is on a roll. In the past four years millions of them have been produced. Historically the $2 was used as change at racetracks and other gambling places. Now there is even a $2 Bill Project on the Internet that encourages people to request the bills on the second of each month and circulate them. The site states it will make shopping easier and billfolds less cluttered. - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Susan Says . . .

Winter weather has returned this week with subfreezing temperatures and chilling winds. Showers of leaves continue to flutter down from the maples in the front yard and the young pecan out by the shop. A nice rain Friday morning watered the earth and temperatures were in the 60’s but a cold front moved through and the mercury dropped into the 30’s by evening. It was not a welcome change for all the fans at Lion Field cheering on the team at their first playoff game. Tuesday was Veteran’s Day and also sister Nancy’s anniversary. It was a holiday at the post office so there was no mail delivery but I wrote a letter to a friend in Noel to place in the box the next morning. I spent the afternoon reading some newspapers and sorting them for recycling. Jim made stew for supper and that evening Aunt Leta called to give us the welcome news that Leda was home from the rehab center. - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

OPINION? Everybody Has One!!

Do you remember July the 14th? Hot, even hotter than July 4th, and steamy heat at 6:30 a.m. and not even a tiny relief in sight was the forecast and, believe me, that one was correct! I do remember it well. Then there is today, damp and cloudy, not one sign of sunshine and my hands are stiff and cold. I have been politely instructed to get the yard cleaned up for the substantial crowd of folks that will appear for the upcoming holiday. I am always such a nice and helpful feller that you know I don’t mind doing my share, but today? It rained, the leaves are wet, the sun won’t shine and my hands are cold and stiff! I went in for a cup of hot coffee about 10 o’clock. I think that is the defined hour of coffee breaks in the union jobs and she wanted to know why I was in the house and to please pick up the wet leaves that had followed me in! My close relative is a gracious lady, one of genteel upbringing and always correct. She is correct no matter what and I have learned to understand that fact. Letter To The Editor . . .

Dear Editor, I would like to take the time to say a big “Thank You” to the fans from Gravette and the coaches and fans from Ashdown. All the concern that was shown to Teddy when he was injured during the game on Friday, November 14, was overwhelming. This school and community seem like “family” and that was obvious on Friday night. Thank You to all the people who helped in taking care of Teddy from those on the field to those in the emergency room, and especially to his teammates who have always been there for him.
