FLINT CREEK, Okla. — A 13-yearold boy dove into a flooded Flint Creek to rescue a friend, but the friend ended up rescuing the boy from drowning Monday afternoon. Emergency workers pulled Shadoe Miller of Flint Ridge, Okla., from the creek and transported him to Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital. Miller was treated and released. The incident occurred after 2 p. m. under the Flint Creek bridge on U. S. Highway 412.
Steve Brownell, of Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, was one of the first responders on the scene.
The boy was conscious but very pale when Brownell arrived, he said. He soon started getting his color back.
“ He was breathing, ” Brownell said. “ He’s been doing pretty good. ”
Miller was lying on a gravel island surrounded by the flooded creek that was just downstream from a fast flowing spillway. The bridge above cast a shadow on the island.
A Siloam Springs swift-water rescue team took Miller from the creek island to the ambulance. The team was comprised of Siloam Springs firefighters and paramedics.
