As usual, first things first: GO VOTE! The runoff election between Jim Halsell and Conrad Odom for the Fayetteville school board seat is today. The turnout will be smaller than the school election on Sept. 16, so every vote is critically important.
The right and the obligation to vote is something on which we can all agree. It's even one of the few things on which Archie Bunker and his son-in-law, Meathead, ever agreed. Archie said it well to one of his buddies in one episode when it was discovered that his friend hadn't voted in the last election, despite his constant complaining about the government. "If youse didn't vote," said Archie, "then shut yer yap!"
The polling places will be the same as the ones used for the Sept. 16 election, and the polls will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. If you do not know where to vote, contact the Washington County Clerk's Office at 444-1711.
It's another busy week in Fayetteville with lots of events on the calendar. However, two deserve special mention.
On Tuesday, the host of the "Parenting Works" series on PBS, Milton Creagh, will speak at 7 p.m. in the Fayetteville High School auditorium. Creagh speaks to 200,000 students and parents annually, and his presentation, "Parenting is Prevention," features straight talk about the challenges facing today's students, families and schools. Maybe you can record the presidential debate and catch this dynamic speaker. For more information on Creagh, visit his Web site at www.miltoncreagh.com.
It's Homecoming Week at Fayetteville High School, and that means that it's also the week for the Fayetteville Schools Hall of Honor ceremonies. It's hard to believe that this will be the 12th time we've honored our difference-makers and celebrated their achievements. Reading the list of the previous inductees to the Hall of Honor brings to mind so many memories of the previous events and the laughter, pride, friendship, honor and even the few tears they invoked.
The 2008 inductees bring additional luster to the Hall of Honor. They include retired U.S. Naval Academy professor Alan Adams (FHS Class of 1953), former Root Elementary School Principal Oma Blackwell and longtime community leader Larry Bittle.
The honorees will speak to FHS students during assemblies at FHS on Thursday morning. The induction ceremonies will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville Town Center. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a three-course mail prepared and served by chef Miles James of James at the Mill.
If you are looking for an upbeat evening that will send you home with a lasting glow that reaffirms precisely why you live in Fayetteville, this is your event. You may still make reservations to attend by calling the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation office at 527-3655.
The honorees will serve as grand marshals of the Homecoming Parade, which will begin at 3 p.m. and end with a pep rally on the Fayetteville Square. The honorees will also be introduced to the crowd prior to kickoff of the Homecoming game against Fort Smith Northside at 7:30 p.m.
