It’s hard to believe we’re already in the middle of May but this year is speeding by at a rapid clip. Thankfully, with the weather settling down a bit, area anglers can finally get on the water a little more often. Good luck.
Beaver Lake Southtown Sporting Goods — Bass fishing is fair in the shallows on spinnerbaits and plastic worms. Crappie are scattered. White bass action is still pretty good near Blue Springs and Twin Bridges. Hook, Line and Sinker in Rogers — Aaron Jolliff says bass anglers are beating the flooded bushes with spinnerbaits and jigs and finding a fair amount of success doing it.
Hickory Creek Marina — Lee Winkler says small stripers are coming in near the mouths of the White and War Eagle. Big shiners fished down to 30 feet are the top bait. Crappie will hit minnows on spider rigs fished 10-12 feet deep over depths down to 25 feet. The Kelly Creek area gets top billing for crappie right now. Bass action is slow but Kentucky bass are biting crankbaits. Flatheads are biting jugs rigged with live bait.
Beaver Tailwaters — Lisa Mullins at Beaver Dam Store reports good trout action but a boat is still the best way to maneuver the high water. Bait anglers are using night crawlers or Power Bait tipped with a wax worm. Shad Raps, Countdowns and Kastmasters (silver / orange ) are the top lure selections. Fly anglers are slinging Janssen’s Minnows, San Juan worms and white Woolly Buggers.
Bella Vista Lakes — Nick Gann at Hook, Line and Sinker in Bentonville says bass fishing is good on Flukes, trick worms or lizards from 15 feet to the bank. Red ear and blue gill will bite worms and crickets in depths less than eight feet.
Lake Fayetteville — Bass are hitting topwater baits. Blue gill fishing is good on crickets and worms. A few crappie are also being reported.
Lake Sequoyah — Jackie Smith reports fair crappie action on minnows and tubes. Catfish are biting near bluffs on chicken liver or cut bait. Bass are shallow and will bite white crankbaits, white spinnerbaits and Rattle Traps.
Prairie Grove Lake — Bob Keen reports bass biting topwater baits. Crappie and bream are biting jigs.
Upper Table Rock Lake — J. D. Fletcher suggests secondary points in coves as prime target areas for bass, although the extra water makes finding them tough. Finesse worms, tubes and spinnerbaits will work once fish are located. Crappie are biting minnows fished around boat docks. The white bass run is about over but a few will bite small jerkbaits or eighth-ounce marabou jigs.
Kings River — J. D. Fletcher says folks are beginning to float the river and finding the smallmouth cooperative on tube baits and Rebel Wee-Rs.
