ArkAppella Show Chorus Billye Martin and her mother, Wanda Haines, are one of the mother-daughter duos among the 27, 000 women who are members of Sweet Adelines International. The duo sings with ArkAppella Show Chorus anchoring the baritone section.
For each of the women, music became a part of their lives very early. Haines fondly remembers her mother's monthly "music parties"where the furniture was moved out of the living room and the old-time musicians moved in to play. There were fiddles, banjos, guitars, mandolins, a piano and, of course, a multitude of voices and dancers. She doesn't remember learning to dance as she began as a toddler on her uncles'shoes. Martin recalls being the kid who would sing and recite commercials to entertain the family, quickly recognizing the adoring smiles and attention that brought her. Early on she was a part of family sing-alongs featuring country music such as that of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams.
As time moved on, Martin continued interests in music through school choirs, singing with friends, church worship teams and as a mom who home schooled. She was the one directing the plays, which necessitated being an assistant singer and actor at times. Haines kept music a part of her life for many years directing a children's choir for her church, directing and participating in plays. Marriage put music aside for years.
A second marriage renewed the love of the art. From that new beginning, the couple, Wanda and Larry, eventually formed a gospel group with a band who named themselves the Sunshine Gospel Singers. A move to Oklahoma left them without a group for a while until Heaven's Echos became a much-sought-after group for performances. The group went on to produce tapes and CDs. Haines'husband, Larry, developed lung cancer and could no longer sing. "Larry lost his wind, so we didn't sing anymore. Then I lost him and with that, my joy, and I didn't want to sing anymore," she shared.
Haines moved to Bentonville to be near her family. Martin saw the articles about ArkAppella Show Chorus beginning in July 2007, and the two decided to come see what that was all about. They came, they stayed and have become a dynamic force in the chorus.
ArkAppella Show Chorus is currently inviting interested women to come sing with the chorus and participate in the Christmas Show on Dec. 14. The show will be themed around "A Salute to the USO."
