Now & Then : Persimmons aren't sweet until after the first frost, boy learns

JERRY NICHOLS Columnist

It is persimmon season, and I am remembering a time when I wished I had been a little clearer in my knowledge about persimmons. Persimmons gave me a lesson in life about how a little knowledge can lead a person to bumble into something he really doesn’t understand. Sometimes we discover that we don’t know quite enough about things we think we know. Back in 1948 and 1949 I had a good friend, Stevie Rimmer, who was in our class at school. As I recall he was with us during the third grade and fourth grade years. Stevie’s family lived northeast of Pea Ridge, near Twelve Corners, on the Audie Buttry farm. I think they were kin to the Buttrys. Possibly Stevie’s mother was a Buttry — I’m not sure. Stevie and I got along well as friends, and every so often each of us would stay overnight for a visit at the other’s home. Around the farm there were always things to do and to explore. We even enjoyed doing chores together on those visits. One time at our farm, Stevie persuaded me to go swimming in Otter Creek in late Oc - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Yesterday and Today : Fun in early days with automobile adventures and teen boys

HELEN PITTS ARNN Columnist

One of the families about whom I meant to write was the Louis Carter family and there in lies the young folks and automobile story. But let us not get the car before the kids. My parents were a few years older than Louis and Ruth Carter thus the oldest of Carter kids are the same age as the youngest of the Pitts kids. The Carter family/Pitts family relationship as the saying goes “goes way back.” Both families moved from place to place often. Sometimes the Carters were close neighbors and sometimes not. We were close neighbors at the time the three eldest of the Carters, Bill, J.C. and Marie, were born. I’m pretty sure that my mother assisted Doc Green at the birth of each of them. At the time of Marie’s birth, Ruth Carter declared to Doc Green that there were to be no more children — three children were enough for her! Doc Green’s response was “Not likely.” And, of course, he was proved right when Mary Helen, Joyce Lee and Junior were eventually added to the family. Bill started to school at Pea Ridge in 193 - Wednesday, November 19, 2008
