If voters approve, Garfield may grow by 10 percent.

At a special City Council meeting Thursday, aldermen voted unanimously to approve an ordinance placing the question of annexation on the fall ballot. Mayor Laura Hamilton presented the map and ordinance explaining that the Regional Planning Commission had prepared the map.

"The ordinance allows it to be on the ballot. Then it's up to the voters," Hamilton told the council, explaining that the areas chosen were more densely populated than others. Many of the residents in the areas proposed for annexation already receive city water.

She said water and trash rates are less expensive for city residents than county residents. The map will be on file at City Hall for anyone who wants to view it.

Annexation proposals on the ballot allow both the city residents and the residents of the area being proposed for annexation to vote on the issue.

Garfield has no prohibition for fireworks, discharging of firearms, livestock or dog ordinances. City residents are required to contract for trash pickup but there are provisions for senior citizens to pay by the bag instead of the month.
