HUNTSVILLE -- It may not have been America's next top model but the first annual Madison County's Next Top Mongrel was an event to be remembered.

The event, which was hosted by the Hogeye Squirrel and Coon Club, to benefit the Madison County Pet Shelter (MCPS ) was held Saturday evening at the American Legion Hall in Huntsville.

Thirty five participants signed in for the event. Of those 35 pets 15 were former adoptions from the shelter. The shelter also brought several pets ready for adoption for the children who wanted to participate but did not have a pet.

Some pets came in costume to the event. A trio of dachshunds in a baby stroller was a huge hit, according to Caren Sharp of the MCPS.

"They were dressed as a brother and sister with the third dog in the back of the stroller wearing goggles as a father type figure. They were a big hit," Sharp said.

The four members of the Hogeye Squirrel and Coon group were a crowd favorite. The four men entertained the crowd and served as emcees for the event.

"We had a blast," Sharp said.

A raffle was held with the prize of a tiffany style bobble head dog lamp, the lamp was awarded to Veronica Rosenau.

The ladies of the American Legion cooking staff donated the money they received for the sale of food during the evening to the MCPS. The staff donated $ 95 to the shelter.

A total of $ 612 was made by the event and will go the shelters, low income spay and neuter program.

The shelter's next fundraiser will begin on Nov. 1. The shelter will sponsor a Bingo night at the Community Center in Huntsville on Saturdays in November from 5-9 p.m.

The games will be held on the 1 st, 8 th, 15 th and 22 nd of November. The charge is $ 20 for four cards with every card over that being $ 5 each. Cash prizes will be awarded. According to Sharp, there will be food and beverages available as well as some consignment items at the bingo evening.

The Madison County Pet Shelter is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. According to Sharp, the shelter now has close to forty-five cats and dogs. "We are full right now," Sharp said.
