Deadline for property tax payments Oct. 10
Posted on Thursday, October 2, 2008
The deadline of Oct. 10 to pay property taxes is creeping up on many people.
Drive-through stations on the Washington County Courthouse parking lot are available from 8 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and the night depository is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, Washington County Collector David Ruff said.
So far, staff members in the Collector's Office are waiting for people to show up and pay, as collections have ebbed a bit since a rush of payments in the spring.
"About three or four days before the deadline is when they all try to come in," Ruff said.
He brings in part-time people to help with the rush that surrounds the deadline.
One is a former employee who is taking vacation and will be available to help with mailed payments.
Another person, a parttime employee, will turn full time for the property tax season. She will arrive on Monday and "work for about a month straight," Ruff said.
"We will run mail seven to 10 days after the 10 th," Ruff said.
If checks are dated Oct. 10 and envelopes post-marked on that date, they will be accepted as being on time, Ruff said.
People are delinquent on Oct. 11.
Personal property and real estate taxes carry penalties for being even one day delinquent; the penalty is roughly 10 percent of the amount owed.
For real estate, 10 percent interest on the amount owed begins accruing on Oct. 11 and continues until the taxes are paid.
